Install

One command in a repository your team works on finds Claude Code, Cursor and Codex on your machine and asks before setting up each one. You need Node.js 22.14 or later and git.

npx @align-agent/cli init

It signs you in through your browser, lists what is captured and what never is, asks you to opt this repository in, and merges its hooks without overwriting yours.

What leaves your laptop, among other things: your prompts and the agent's replies, after secrets are redacted and code blocks and tool calls are replaced by placeholders; the repository paths the agent touched; each event's branch, head commit and a salted hash of your machine's name; what you record with align decide, align ask and the MCP tools; and your commits' messages and file names, never their diffs. Your files' contents are never sent. What is captured, and who sees it.

One harness at a time

Claude Code

npx @align-agent/cli init --harness claude-code

Adds the session hooks, the /align command and the MCP server (registered with claude mcp add, local scope: nothing is committed to your repository).

Cursor

npx @align-agent/cli init --harness cursor

Adds hooks to ~/.cursor/hooks.json and the MCP server to ~/.cursor/mcp.json, merged with what is already there.

Codex

npx @align-agent/cli init --harness codex

Adds hooks to ~/.codex/hooks.json and registers the MCP server with codex mcp add.

Claude Code plugin

Or install the Claude Code plugin.

In Claude Code, add the marketplace and install the plugin, then run /align:init in a repository your team works on. The plugin brings the hooks, the MCP server and /align:align; init then adds nothing else for Claude Code.

Any other MCP agent

After init, print the configuration snippet for your agent (Gemini CLI and others) and paste it where that agent reads its MCP servers:

align mcp --print-config <agent>

After installing

align confirm

Confirm the decisions found in your recent sessions. Check the setup any time with align doctor; stop capture in this repository with align off; remove what was added for this repository with align uninstall, and everything kept on this laptop with align uninstall --purge --yes.
